The Season of Lent 2010
The highlight of the year for Christians is Easter, the day when our Lord rose from the dead. Lent is a 40 day season of preparation for Easter.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
February 16, 2010 5 - 6:30pm
This is also called "Fat Tuesday" because on that day a thrifty housewife uses up the fats that she has kept around for cooking, but that she will not use during Lent. Since pancakes are a standard way of using up fat, that is why many have a pancake meal.
Imposition of the Ashes
February 17, 2010 6:30pm
Our first Lenten Service is called Ash Wednesday. All candles on the Lenten Wreath will be lit at this service, and beginning on the First Sunday of Lent, one will be extinguished each week, with the final candle extinguished on Good Friday. Imposition of the Ashes: Ashes may be imposed on the heads of participants in the Ash Wednesday services as a sign of mortality and pentinence. The ashes are imposed with the words, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" (BCP, p. 265). Ashes are typically imposed by inscribing a cross on the forehead. The imposotion of ahses has been practiced on Ash Wednesday since the ninth century. Ref: An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church
